Founded in 1992, the Finnish Society for Health Economics (Terveystaloustieteen Seura TTTS in Finnish) is a member of the Federation of Finnish Learned Societies. Among its other activities, the society organises a one-day conference on health-economic research at the beginning of February each year, with the help of financial contributions from both the Yrjö Jahnsson Foundation and the Stiftelsen Svenska Handelshögskolan Fund. This event has usually been comprised of a presentation by an international expert on a timely topic related to health economics, in addition to presentations on recent research by health economists in Finland. In the early years of the conference, extended research abstracts from the conference were published in the ‘Aiheita’ series of the National Research and Development Centre for Welfare and Health (STAKES) and, since 2009, by the National Institute for Health and Welfare in its ‘Avauksia’ series of discussion-papers.
The society also organises a seminar for post-graduate students each spring and autumn, giving an opportunity for students (and others) to present their work and receive comments from senior researchers. These seminars are arranged, in turn, by the universities of Eastern Finland, Helsinki and Tampere.
In addition, the society has organised visits for its members to universities, research institutions and commercial enterprises. The society also keeps its members informed of important national and international events and developments via its e-mail list. Many of the society’s members frequently attend various international conferences on health economics. Cooperation also takes place with Nordic health economists, as exemplified by the organisation of the Nordic Health Economists’ Study Group (NHESG) in Finland in Kuopio in 1992 and in 2012 and in Helsinki in 1997 and 2002. In 2007 the society also helped to co-organise the NHESG meeting in Tartu, Estonia. Collaboration with the British health-economic community has been both long and varied - due, in part, to many of the society’s members having studied at the University of York.
In 2010 the society took great pride in organising the 8th European Conference on Health Economics, which took place in Helsinki. Over the years, many internationally renowned health economists have given lectures at the society’s events as guests of the society - we hope such fruitful contributions will continue!
